Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Chama SnoBall Rally be canceled due to inclement weather?

Flying a hot air balloon is very dependent on the weather, with ideal winds ranging between 4-6 mph. Our pilots will never cancel until the conditions are evaluated each morning. Snow or sunshine, they will fly if they can fly.

What time do the hot air balloons fly?

Generally, pilots fly between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. when conditions are typically best in the Chama Valley. Flights can occur later in the morning if tough conditions improve and become safe to fly.

What are the best locations to view the hot air balloons in Chama?

Everyone has his or her favorite location to watch the rally. In our opinion, it’s hard to go wrong parking yourself in the downtown area, even on the streets where pilots and crews are setting up. Nothing beats getting up close and watching everything from the ground to the sky.

Where do the hot air balloons launch from in Chama?

Pilots select their launch locations each morning, determined largely by wind direction. In most years, the balloons launch from the north side of town within the neighborhoods and fly south.
